The Third open SEAFOODplus Conference was held 30-31 May 2006 in Tromsø, Norway, in the modern  Conference Center 'Arktika', Polarmiljøsentret.

 Fiskeriforskning in Tromsø was the local organiser of the SEAFOODplus Conference.

 
Programme
The latest innovative SEAFOODplus research results was  presented of highest relevance for the industry, scientists of various disciplines, and policy makers.

 
On the first day of the SEAFOODplus Conference four main themes were addressed. The first considered what consumers would like to know about seafood in contrast to how industry is prepared to deliver this information e.g. in the form of traceability. The second theme contrasted seafood product characteristics and how these may impact the quality of life of young consumers. The third theme addressed aquaculture and the last theme considered potential loss of nutrients by industrial processing and in household preparations.

On the second day of the SEAFOODplus Conference three parallel symposia covered:'Consumer oriented seafood product development''Seafood and lowering the risk of chronic diseases''New developments to manage microbial seafood safety'

 
Brokerage event
A partnering event 31 May assisted and encouraged the participants to identify, approach and develop new partnering and business opportunities with other European researchers and companies in a cost and time efficient way.  The objective was to actively stimulate and support the dissemination of innovative research results and trans national technology transfer within the seafood industry by organising a qualified face-to-face forum.

 
Reception 29/5 and Conference Dinner 30/5

A welcome reception took place on Monday 29 May at 19.00 at the  Polaria Museum.
 
The mayor of Tromsø, Hermann Kristoffersen, and the SEAFOODplus Coordinator, Torger Børresen, welcomed the participants to Tromsø. Seafood delicacies were kindly offered by Rya produkter.

 
On the evening of 30 May a Conference Banquet was held at  Rica Ishavs hotel, Tromsø. The award for the best presentation was delivered to Øyvind Aas-Hansen, Fiskeriforskning, for the presentation 'Using SmartTag as operational welfare indicator of farmed fish'.

 
Meetings 31 May, 1-2 June
The third meeting of the General Assembly took place on 31 May at 17:00 – 18:30 at Arktika.

 
The SEAFOODplus partners had their closed project and pillar meetings on 1 June 2006 at Arktika and 2 June 2006 at Fiskeriforskning.

 
The External Advisory Board met 2 June 9:00 – 14:00 at Fiskeriforskning.

 

 
 Tromsø
Tromsø is the largest city in the Nordic countries north of the Arctic Circle. The city lives on education, research, administration, fishing exports and satellite technology. The centre of the north has 62,000 residents and the Municipality of Tromsø covers an area of 2558 km². Around 50,000 live in the centre of Tromsø, while the remainder is scattered throughout the whole municipality. In spite of their location so far north, Tromsø and Lyngen both enjoy a moderate insular climate. Summer weather ranges from 5°C and rain to 28 °C and fantastic swimming conditions for the undaunted.
